The Role of a Person Who Made a Difference

Designed by  Kathleen Webster

Develop a simulation component with a lesson plan that will engage the students in a political event.

Introduction

Your assignment for this activity is to research a person who made a difference in America by being politically active.  You will assume the role of the person and be required to play a part in a scenario designed for that particular person.  Example:  Your role may be to be President John F. Kennedy talking about the “Bay of Pigs” incident.

The answer you want to discover is how this person you are playing impact your life by being politically active.

The Task

The Task is to learn about politics and how it impacts your life.  You will be playing a role of someone who has had an impact in history.

  • Describe the problem you character faced in this situation;
  • did your character make the right choice in his or her actions;
  • name other factors that played a part in your characters decisions;
  • analyze how history reflected this decision;
  • summarized the persons knowledge and ability to act on this problem;
  • did this action change history and if so how;
  • you will be required to speak for 7 minutes and turn in a one page outline of your speech;
  • poster, charts,  or
  • power point presentation can be used.

The Process

The idea of this process is to allow you the opportunity to step in to the shoes of someone who has had to make a decision that impacted your life.  It also can be an opportunity for you to learn about a politician or political event that would give you better understanding of being political engaged.

  1. You will be given an opportunity to select a real person that has made a difference in America.  (subject to the approval of the instructor)
  2. Once your role has been selected you will research your character and the situation you have elected to discuss.
  3. You will create a one page document describing the person
  4. You will create a one page document describing the event
  5. You will create a one page outline of your speech.
  6. The speech can not exceed 7 minutes.  All documents will be turned in to the instructor at the time of the speech.
  7. Student can be creative in their presentation of the event.
  8. Two students can perform together if the scenario allows such as a Presidential debate.
  9. Class members will evaluate the content and the performance

Evaluation

The evaluation will be based on the knowledge of your character and the event being portrayed.

The objective of this exercise is to provide you with an opportunity to investigate a person that has made a difference because they were politically involved.  Do you think it is important to be politically engaged in college?

If not, why?  How could you become politically engaged?
