New York Times Project

Designed by Kathleen Webster

Introduction

Each week you will be required to review articles in the New York
Times newspaper and then select one to write a paper on. The concept is to allow you the opportunity to learn about the world you live in and how it impacts your life.

The Task

The Task is to find an article that should relate to current events.  The current events topic should deal with something that is influenced by government, politics, or culture norms.  Example: The unrest of a country under political turmoil.  War protest in the United States.  In the paper there should be two paragraphs.

The first paragraph will give an overall review of the contents of the article.  The second paragraph will be your opinion on what you think should be done to help.  Each class period students will be selected to read their paper and short discussion will follow with the class. The paper will then be turned in for credit. A new article will be sued is each week.  Students may continue on the same subject matter if additional articles are present.

The Process

The idea of this process is to allow you the opportunity to read about current events while selecting an article in the New York Times. The process will be a low level activity to spark your interest in becoming involved in the world you live in.

  1. You will be given an opportunity to select an article of your own choosing.
  2. During your presentation of the paper you will be allowed to become familiar with presenting information.
  3. You will be able to discuss your opinion with other classmates
  4. You will learn to be a good listener when others present their articles.
  5. You will begin the process of critical thinking and putting your own thoughts on paper.
  6. You will not be required to present each week but must be prepared to do so if asked.
  7. Class members will evaluate the content and may discuss your comments.

7.

Evaluation

The evaluation will be based on the knowledge of your character and the event being portrayed.
